The Cure was just getting into their darker phase with Seventeen Seconds, and it’s plain to see the influence their music would have on future generations. The lyrics of “Play For Today” don’t start until about a minute in; it’s all moody and brooding up until that point. This is my favorite track on Seconds, and probably for no particular reason. For some of the most emotionally stimulating bands, what they were singing pained them; The Cure, however, was singular in that it always seemed to be what Robert Smith wouldn’t say that hurt the worst.
